Commercial: National Car Parks has been the leading car park provider in Britain for decades, and now works successfully in the broader transport sector.

We provide a range of services including car park management, airport parking, and consultancy for the design, build and maintenance of car parks.

The company is the leading provider of ‘On Street’ parking enforcement and related services to local authorities in the UK, and also offers a street design consultancy through its subsidiary Project Centre Ltd.

Company history and profile

Geographical operation/location: Nationwide with 900 car parks and in excess of 40 local authority contracts for traffic management and enforcement of RTA 1991. Prestigious national contract working on behalf of the DVLA to remove untaxed vehicles.

Staff numbers. Circa 6,500

Profiler of staff. Wide range of skills, including; bus drivers, car park attendants, On Street Enforcement and a wide range of consultant roles acting on behalf of Local Authorities.

Values and Approach to employment policy

NCP has been named as one of just nine organisations to be awarded Investors in People Champion status for 2006.

The Investors in People Champions programme recognises employers that have boosted the performance of their organisation through the way they manage and develop their employees. Each will have demonstrated consistent commitment to people development as a way of delivering its organisation's goals.

Following the award to NCP of Investors in People status in 2005, the company’s continuing work on training and people management has seen it selected for the coveted ‘Champion’ status.

The Champions, such as NCP will work with Investors in People UK to share their expertise with other employers through a series of best practice sharing activities, designed to promote effective alignment of people development with business strategies.  The activities will include mentoring and site visits to the Champion organisations.

Business reason for employing migrant workers

In simple terms to fill vacancies in the parking sector whilst capitalising on the range of skills and excellent work ethic that migrant workers can bring.

Models and Process

Each employee carries a photo ID card that is issued at the start of their employment and is linked to industry leading checks on permission to work documentation.

We have invested in highly trained and dedicated ID screening staff whose role is to check and process ID card applications.

This approach, when coupled to tailored software, allows all  applications, photographs and copies of documents verifying a person’s permission to work in the UK to be stored, as well as providing alerts when an individual’s visa or right to work in the UK is about to expire. All of this process is managed by the Risk Management Team from our Birmingham Office.

This team has developed considerable expertise in recognising fraudulent documentation and has established strong links with embassies, in particular the French and Dutch. The size of our business means that we are able to pick up on trends and emerging risks with documentation fraud.

Supporting this are field based staff who regularly attend recruitment days to deter people who are not permitted to work in the UK from applying at the outset. The Risk Management team have also trained other staff on what to look for on visas, and have developed detailed  reference materials.

Future Intentions

To strive to work closely with the Home Office to help develop and implement best practice screening processes that have clarity of purpose and add value to all sectors.
